How to Wash a Backpack Without Ruining It

Giving Your Backpack a Light Cleaning

If all your backpack needs is a little freshening up, spot cleaning is the way to go. To spot treat stains, use a mild detergent or dish soap and a damp cloth. Gently dab at the stain or use a soft brush to scrub. Blot with cool water and use a clean cloth to wipe away any remaining residue. Allow to air dry completely before use.

Even if your bag is in serious need of a deep clean, don’t just throw it in the wash right away—not all backpacks can be safely washed in a washing machine. Before you begin cleaning, reference the care instructions for the best guidance on how to wash your backpack without ruining it. The care instructions can generally be found on a label sewn into the interior of the bag.

  1. Remove your belongings: Empty the contents of the backpack, checking all pockets to ensure that nothing accidentally gets left behind.
  2. Remove anything detachable: Take off any removable or detachable compartments or accessories, like keychains, buttons, pins, or patches.
  3. Brush off exterior dirt: Gently brush off any dirt or dust clinging to the outside of the backpack.
  4. Shake out backpack: Unzip and open all compartments, then flip the backpack upside down, and shake out any crumbs or debris that may be hiding inside. You can also use a hand vacuum for this!
  5. Pre-treat stains: Use a gentle stain remover, like Truly Free Home Non-Toxic Stain Stick, to pre-treat particularly tough stains before washing.
  6. Use a mesh bag or turn inside out: Place the backpack in a mesh laundry bag (Pro tip: A pillowcase will also work, if you don’t have one!), or, in a real pinch, turn the backpack inside out. This helps ensure that zippers, buckles, and straps don’t get caught.
  7. Wash: Using a mild detergent, like Truly Free Home Laundry Wash, wash with cold or lukewarm (not hot!) water and select a delicate cycle.
  8. Air dry: Remove the backpack from the washer, turn it upside down, and hang it up dry. Do not put your backpack in the dryer, as this can damage the fabric, waterproof finishes, or plastic pieces.

Hand Washing Your Backpack

If you’re unable to machine wash your bag, hand washing it is a great alternative. However, it’s important to note that not all backpacks should be submerged in water. If that’s the case with your backpack, spot cleaning is your safest bet.

To hand wash your backpack, begin by following steps 1–5 from the “Machine Washing Your Backpack” section above.

6. Fill a basin with water and soap: In your sink, bathtub, or a wash basin, add cold or lukewarm (not hot!) water and your go-to mild detergent.

7. Wash: Submerge your bag in the basin and carefully swish it around. If there are stained areas, you can use a soft brush to gently scrub them.

8. Rinse: Drain the basin and run fresh, cool water to rinse away any remaining soap residue.

9. Dry: Using a towel, gently press out excess water. Then, ensure that all compartments are unzipped and open, turn the backpack upside down, and hang it up to air dry. (Do not put it in the dryer!) Make sure the backpack is completely dry before next use.

Whether you’re cleaning up melted granola bars, resetting after a trip, or just looking to start the school year fresh, clean backpacks are a great way to make sure you and your family are ready for whatever adventure’s next.
