How to Clean Beach & Pool Toys the Non-Toxic Way

Summer isn’t complete without sandy buckets, inflatable floaties, and dive toys. With a few simple, non-toxic household ingredients, you can keep your family’s favorite water accessories clean, safe, and ready for many more sun-soaked days.

What You’ll Need Before You Start

Getting your toys beach and pool ready doesn’t require much—just a few staples you likely already have around the house. Best of all, these gentle, non-toxic essentials can tackle dirt, grime, and odors without exposing your family to unnecessary chemicals.

  • Warm water
  • A garden hose
  • A bucket, sink, or large basin
  • A non-toxic, mild dish soap like Truly Free Home Dish Soap
  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda

Step-by-Step Guide: Cleaning Hard Plastic and Rubber Beach & Pool Toys

Step 1: Shake off dirt and sand

Before packing up the toys into your wagon or car, take a few minutes to shake and brush off any loose debris. Don’t forget the easy-to-miss corners and crevices too. That way, when you get home, you’re starting with a cleaner slate to make the rest of the process more effortless.

Step 2: Prep a gentle cleaning solution

Fill a bucket, sink, or basin with warm water and add a small squirt of non-toxic dish soap (enough to make some suds). If the toys could use a little extra attention, add a splash of vinegar to help break down lingering residue and smells naturally.

For more stubborn stains, mix ¼ cup of baking soda with just enough warm water to form a baking soda paste. Scrub it onto the affected area, and rinse clean.

Step 3: Rinse and scrub

Give the toys a good rinse with a garden hose or bucket to remove any remaining sand or dirt and to prevent any scratching or damage while washing. Then, using a cleaning cloth, soft sponge, or small scrub brush, gently clean each item, paying special attention to textured surfaces, seams, air valves (namely for inflatable toys), and hard-to-reach areas where dirt and sunscreen residue tend to build up.

Step 4: Rinse clean

After you’re done scrubbing, rinse each toy with clean water to ensure any soap or vinegar solution isn’t left behind.

Step 5: Let everything air dry completely

Lay toys out on a clean towel or drying rack in a sunny, well-ventilated area and allow them to fully dry before storing them away. Any moisture hanging around can create the perfect environment for mold, mildew, and unwanted odors, especially on inflatable items and toys with small openings.

Step 6: Store wisely

Once everything is completely dry, store the toys in a breathable mesh bag or an open bin in a cool, dry place. Avoid putting damp items into sealed containers, where trapped moisture can quickly lead to mold and musty smells.

A little upkeep goes a long way. With some simple TLC and gentle, toxin-free cleaning supplies, you can keep your family's go-to beach and pool toys in great shape for all your summer outings.
