How to Wash Down, Alpaca, & Silk Comforters at Home

Posted By: Truly Free Home|Posted On: 12/26/2025

Before You Wash: Check the Care Label

No matter which type of comforter you have, always start by reading the care label. Some comforters are labeled "dry clean only," and if that's the case, it's best to follow that recommendation.

But many down, alpaca, and silk comforters can be washed at home with the right method. If the label says "hand wash" or "machine washable," you're good to proceed.

Pre-Treat Stains

If you notice any stains, treat them before washing. Lightly mist the stained area with Truly Free Home Laundry Stain Spray and gently dab with a clean, damp cloth. Avoid scrubbing or rubbing, which can damage delicate fibers.

Let the treatment sit for a few minutes, then move on to washing.

How to Wash a Down Comforter

Down comforters are filled with soft feathers that range from ducks or geese, and they need gentle handling to keep the fill fluffy and evenly distributed. Here’s how to wash a down comforter and keep the fill intact.

Step 1: Check that your washing machine is large enough. Down comforters are bulky and need room to move. If your home machine is too small, use a commercial front-load washer at a laundromat.

Step 2: Set your machine to a gentle cycle with cool or warm water (never hot).

Step 3: Add a small amount of Truly Free Home Laundry Wash—about ¼ cap. Down requires a gentle, residue-free detergent that won't strip the natural oils from the feathers or leave behind buildup.

Step 4: Run the comforter through an extra rinse cycle to make sure all detergent is removed.

Step 5: Dry on low heat in a large-capacity dryer. Add a few clean tennis balls or wool dryer balls to help fluff the down and prevent clumping. Check every 20-30 minutes and fluff by hand.

Drying can take 2-3 hours, but it's important you make sure the down dries completely to prevent mildew.

How to Wash an Alpaca Comforter

Alpaca fiber is naturally soft, hypoallergenic, and temperature-regulating—but it's also delicate and prone to shrinking if washed incorrectly. Here’s how to wash an alpaca comforter and keep it as cozy as the day you bought it.

Step 1: Fill a bathtub or large basin with cool water. Hot water will cause alpaca fibers to shrink and felt.

Step 2: Add ¼ cap of Truly Free Home Laundry Wash and swish gently to mix.

Step 3: Submerge the alpaca comforter and gently press it into the water. Let it soak for 10-15 minutes without agitating or scrubbing.

Step 4: Drain the tub and refill with fresh cool water. Gently press the comforter to rinse out all laundry detergent. Repeat if necessary.

Step 5: Press the comforter gently against the side of the tub to remove excess water. Do not wring or twist.

Step 6: Lay the alpaca comforter flat on a clean, dry surface away from direct sunlight or heat. Reshape it as needed and allow it to air dry completely. This can take 24-48 hours, depending on thickness.

Never machine dry alpaca—the heat will cause shrinkage and damage the fibers.

How to Wash a Silk Comforter

Silk comforters are lightweight, breathable, and naturally hypoallergenic. Most silk comforters are filled with silk fibers (not just covered in silk), so they require extra gentle care. Here’s how to walk a silk comforter while maintaining its sheen and silkiness.

Step 1: If your silk comforter is machine washable, place it in a large mesh laundry bag to protect it during the wash cycle.

Step 2: Set your washing machine to the delicate cycle with cool water.

Step 3: Add ¼ cap of Truly Free Home Laundry Wash. Silk needs a gentle, non-toxic detergent that won't leave harsh chemical residue or damage delicate fibers.

Step 4: Once the cycle is complete, remove the comforter immediately to prevent wrinkles from setting.

Step 5: Lay the silk comforter flat on a clean, dry surface away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Reshape as needed and allow to air dry completely.

If your silk comforter is labeled "hand wash only," follow the same hand-washing steps outlined for alpaca comforters above, using cool water and gentle handling.

Why Truly Free Home Products Work for Delicate Fabrics

When you're washing luxury bedding like down, alpaca, or silk, the laundry detergent you use matters.

Conventional laundry detergents contain harsh chemicals, optical brighteners, and toxic fragrances that can strip natural fibers, leave behind residue, and cause damage over time.

These ingredients aren't just bad for delicate fabrics—they're also harsh on your skin and the environment.

Truly Free Home Laundry Wash is specifically formulated to be gentle on delicate fibers while still delivering a powerful clean. It's plant-powered, non-toxic, and rinses clean—no residue, no harsh chemicals, just soft, fresh bedding that lasts.

Caring for Luxury Comforters Between Washes

You don't need to wash down, alpaca, or silk comforters often. In fact, washing them too frequently can wear down the fibers.

Here's how to keep down, alpaca, and silk comforters fresh between washes:

Air them out regularly. Once a month, hang your comforter outside on a dry, breezy day (avoid direct sunlight for silk and alpaca). This helps release moisture and keeps bedding fresh.

Use a duvet cover. A washable duvet cover protects your comforter and reduces how often you need to wash it.

Store properly. When not in use, store comforters in breathable cotton storage bags in a cool, dry place. Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture and can lead to mildew.

Washing luxury comforters doesn't have to be intimidating. With the right approach, gentle handling, and non-toxic products like Truly Free Home Laundry Wash, you can keep your down, alpaca, and silk bedding clean, fresh, and beautiful for years to come.
