The Dirty Truth About Fragrance in Cleaning Products

Why Does Clean Always Smell Like Lemon?

For decades, we’ve been trained to believe that clean smells like something. Lemon. Pine. Ocean Breeze.

But here’s the truth: clean doesn’t have a smell.

And if your cleaner has one? It might be affecting your family’s health.

The Myth of the “Clean Smell”

Think about it—have you ever walked into a home, smelled that sharp citrus or floral scent, and thought, “Ahh, it’s so clean in here”?

You’re not alone. That reaction is the result of decades of marketing from big-name cleaning brands convincing us that scent = clean.

In fact, when Stephen, our founder, first tried to sell unscented household cleaners like laundry detergent, he ran an experiment proving this to be true for most people..

When given the choice between a clean-looking towel with no scent and a dirty-looking towel with a scent, most of the people he asked chose the dirty one.

But there’s a problem with this line of thinking:

Those scents are chemical fragrances designed to do two things:

  1. Cover up the smell of the other chemicals in the product itself
  2. Trigger our brains to believe that something has been thoroughly cleaned

But what’s really going on underneath that pleasant smell?

The Fragrance Loophole in Cleaning Products

The fragrance loophole is a weakness in the law that allows manufacturers to hide hundreds of chemicals under a single ingredient word: “fragrance” or “parfum.”

More than 3,000 ingredients hide behind the term fragrance, according to the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment.

No matter how many actual chemicals make up a fragrance, companies are allowed to list  just that one word on a label.

Why? Because “fragrance” is considered a trade secret.

This means you could be exposed to dangerous chemicals—without even knowing it.

Many of these chemicals have been linked to:

  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Respiratory issues
  • Skin irritation
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Diseases like cancer

And because fragrance sticks to fabrics, skin, and surfaces, it lingers long after you’ve finished cleaning.

So… What Is Clean, Really?

True cleanliness means the absence of dirt, microbes, and harmful chemical residues.

It means that your home is safe for your family and pets.

And most importantly, it means that nothing is left behind—especially not a chemical cloud of toxic fragrance.
