As a mom who has navigated the world of cloth diapering, I understand firsthand the challenge of finding a laundry solution that is both baby-safe and effective. One of the biggest concerns for parents like us is ensuring that our little ones aren't exposed to harsh, toxic chemicals in detergent while keeping those precious cloth diapers clean and in great condition. Enter non-toxic Truly Free Laundry products—a game-changer for conscientious parents dedicated to maintaining the cleanliness and longevity of their cloth diapers.

In this blog post, l'll dive into why Truly Free Laundry products are an excellent choice for washing cloth diapers. You'll learn how these baby-friendly cleaning products ensure your baby's comfort and health while keeping your diapers in top condition. Whether you're a seasoned cloth-diaper parent or just starting out, discover how Truly Free can make a significant difference in your daily routine.

STEP 1: Pre-Wash

Pre-washing cloth diapers is crucial for several reasons. First, it helps to remove any lingering residues from manufacturing if they are new, ensuring your diapers are fresh and ready for your baby’s delicate skin. It also primes the fabric, enhancing its absorbency—a key factor for effective diaper performance.

Additionally, prewashing helps to eliminate any loose fibers that could cause irritation or decrease the diaper's longevity. This step is also essential for loosening any leftover debris that might remain even after rinsing. By taking this extra step, you’re setting the stage for cleaner, more absorbent, and longer-lasting cloth diapers, ultimately providing a better experience for both you and your baby.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Instructions:

  • Discard solids before placing soiled diapers into the pail. (This should be done immediately after a diaper change.)
  • Put soiled diapers in the wash.
  • Add the Laundry Wash, Softening Rinse, and Enzyme Stain Remover.
  • Set the washer to COLD and pre-wash.

STEP 2: Heavy Duty Wash

Here’s what you’ll need:

Instructions:

  • Once your pre-wash has finished, shake out the diapers and return them to the wash.
  • Add the Laundry Wash, Softening Rinse, and Enzyme Stain Remover.
  • Set the washer to HOT and run the Heavy Duty wash setting. Once they’ve finished washing, hang all diaper covers out to dry and throw the diapers in the dryer on a warm tumble setting. (Or, to be extra eco-friendly, hang everything to dry!)

Pro Tip: If you notice any lingering stains, rewash with OxyBoost and/or place in the sun for a natural bleaching effect.

Quick Tips

For very hard water, I do not recommend adding any additional rinse cycles as it can cause buildup on cloth diapers. White vinegar can help to soften and deodorize fabrics.

To avoid ammonia buildup, wash your cloth diapers frequently (about every 2 days).

I recommend Unscented Wash and Unscented Softening Rinse for cloth diapers, as the unscented products have a higher concentration of Citric Acid, which is great at neutralizing ammonia compounds. (Ammonia is the primary cause of diaper funk!) Enzyme Stain Remover is important to this process, as it helps breakdown stains and odors. For stubborn stains, try adding OxyBoost in a hot wash for an extra boost of cleanliness.

For additional tough diaper stains even after washing, refer to the Laundry Stripping section. Repeat steps if necessary.
