What Is Calcium Chloride and What Does It Do?

What Is Calcium Chloride?

Calcium chloride is a mineral salt made up of calcium and chloride, two elements your body already uses every day. It dissolves easily in water and is one of the most widely used ingredients across the food, medical, and industrial worlds.

You've almost certainly eaten it. Calcium chloride is used as a firming agent in canned vegetables, a coagulant in cheese-making and tofu production, a mineral additive in bottled water, and an electrolyte in sports drinks. It's in pickles and in beer, too. The FDA classifies it as Generally Recognized as Safe, meaning it has been reviewed and affirmed as safe for use in food at levels consistent with good manufacturing practices. Since it’s safe enough for food, a trace amount in a laundry stain spray is well within the bounds of safety.

Is Calcium Chloride Safe?

Calcium chloride is absolutely safe. The EWG Skin Deep database gives calcium chloride a hazard score of 1 out of 10, the lowest and safest possible rating. In EWG's Guide to Healthy Cleaning, it receives an "A" rating. It’s also not classified as a carcinogen, mutagen, or reproductive toxin by any major regulatory or health body.

The safety data sheet (SDS) for calcium chloride does note that it can cause eye irritation and skin irritation in its concentrated, industrial form. This is true of many mineral salts, including table salt.

However, at low calcium chloride concentrations we use for our Laundry Stain Spray, there’s no cause for concern. You're not handling industrial-grade calcium chloride when you spray your kid's grass-stained jeans.

Why We Use Calcium Chloride In Truly Free Home Laundry Stain Spray

Truly Free Home Laundry Stain Spray uses bio-based enzymes, specifically protease, amylase, and mannanase, to break down protein-based stains (blood, grass, sweat), starch-based stains (food, sauces), and gum-based stains (certain food thickeners and residues). These enzymes are the reason the spray works so well without harmful chemicals, bleach, or harsh surfactants.

But enzymes are proteins, and proteins are inherently fragile. In a liquid formula, enzymes are susceptible to self-degradation (they can literally digest themselves), oxidation, and denaturation from other ingredients in the bottle. Over time, without stabilization, enzymes lose their structure and stop working.

This is where calcium chloride comes in. When calcium chloride dissolves in the formula, it releases calcium ions. These ions bind to the enzyme's protein structure and help it maintain its three-dimensional shape, which is what allows it to function as a catalyst against stains. Without that structural support, the enzyme unfolds and becomes inactive.

In plain terms: calcium chloride is the reason the enzymes in your stain spray are still working when you use it three months after you bought it. It's a stabilizer, not a cleaner, and it plays a critical supporting role in Truly Free Home Laundry Stain Spray.

How to Use Truly Free Home Laundry Stain Spray

For best results, apply our stain spray directly onto the stain and let it sit for at least 5 to 10 minutes before washing. The enzymes need contact time to break down the stain at a molecular level. For tougher or set-in stains, spray and let it sit for up to 30 minutes, or even overnight for the most stubborn spots.

It works on both delicate and everyday fabrics, and it's safe to use on baby clothes, cloth diapers, and bedding. Pair it with Truly Free Home Laundry Wash for a fully non-toxic laundry routine from stain treatment through the wash cycle.

Calcium chloride is one of the most well-studied, widely used, and thoroughly vetted ingredients in the consumer product world. It's in your food, your water, and your medicine cabinet. In Truly Free Home Laundry Stain Spray, it does one essential job: it keeps the enzymes that fight your stains stable and effective from the day the bottle is filled to when you use the last drop. No mystery, no risk, no reason to worry.
