In 2015, a group from the Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf (CCCD) was traveling through Northern Michigan on a fundraising tour. Stephen’s business partner at the time was deeply connected to the deaf community, and the group came to share their mission and ask for support.
Stephen wanted to help. But he didn’t have extra funds to give. Still, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he was meant to do something. So when he and his partner sketched out an early idea for what would eventually become our Dryer Angel, a thought sparked:
Maybe CCCD could make it.
Stephen had already asked a traditional manufacturer for a quote, so he asked CCCD for one, too. When both quotes came back, CCCD’s was higher. Stephen sat with that for a day.
He thought about the deaf community in Jamaica—where unemployment was a staggering 92%—and what kind of opportunity this product could become for them. The next day, he made his decision.
He took CCCD’s quote—and doubled it. When the chance to help the deaf community arose, Stephen’s goal became two-fold: to create a safe, non-toxic dryer sheet alternative and find a way to help build a path to sustainable, dignified work for a community that needed support.
Since that moment, Dryer Angels have helped CCCD launch three income-building initiatives:
And today, we actively employ more than a dozen full-time artisans in Jamaica—women who create every single Dryer Angel by hand. What started as a small idea has grown into something bigger than we ever imagined.
In 2017, Stephen came across a gut-punch of a statistic. Forty million people were living in forced labor or forced marriages. He felt a calling to use the Truly Free Home platform to do more.
With the help of Meridian Lee—a manufacturing partner focused on connecting women artisans to the global market—Truly Free Home began employing survivors of human trafficking in Southeast Asia. Today, 18 women stitch Dryer Angels as part of rebuilding their lives after experiencing unimaginable trauma.
Every Dryer Angel that’s purchased is made by real women reclaiming independence, hope, and safety.
On the surface, Truly Free Home Dryer Angels are a cute, soft, wonderful-smelling dryer sheet alternative. But here’s the impact of dryer angels beyond non-toxic laundry.
One of our artisans—whose identity we protect—shared this message:
“For me, freedom means I can dream about the future. I can breathe and know I am safe and my kids are doing well. I am able to send them to school and know we have a bright future. We are free from fear and worry because I have good sewing work with the Angels.” — Hanna
This is why we do what we do what we do—and why Dryer Angels will always be at the heart of Truly Free Home.
Truly Free Home Dryer Angels are a reminder that sometimes, the smallest household choices—like what softens your clothes—can carry the biggest impact.
Here’s how to use a Truly Free Home Dryer Angel:
Here’s the best part. One hundred percent of Dryer Angel proceeds go directly to supporting CCCD and Meridian Lee, fueling economic empowerment for the deaf community in Jamaica and survivors of trafficking around the world.
Every time you use your Dryer Angel, you’re not just choosing a non-toxic alternative to dryer sheets; you’re choosing to support a community, a woman’s healing, and a woman’s future.
