Laundry Room Cleaning Checklist

Going in blind is never a good idea if you want to clean efficiently and effectively. So before you do anything, create a laundry room cleaning checklist. Here’s our to get you started:

  • Declutter your space
  • Deep clean the washing machine
  • Deep clean the dryer
  • Wipe down surfaces
  • Get organized
  • Create a weekly cleaning task list

Declutter Your Laundry Room First

By the end of the week, my laundry room makes me shudder. There are piles of clothes waiting to be washed, cleaning products spilling over shelves, and the occasional stray toy or knick-knack that somehow found its way in there. If this sounds familiar, decluttering is step one.

Start by clearing any clutter on top of the washer and dryer and emptying the shelves. Sort items into baskets or bins as you go—that goes for detergent, stain removers, and everything in between.

This is also the perfect time to toss expired items, consolidate duplicates, and return out-of-place things to their rightful homes. A gentle reminder I often have to give myself: only keep what you actually use. Creating a fresh, clutter-free foundation instantly lightens the space and makes the next steps go more smoothly.

How to Deep Clean Your Washer and Dryer

Your appliances do the cleaning, but if you want them to keep doing their jobs well, they need to be cleaned, too. Over time, your washing machine collects detergent buildup, dirt, and even mold, affecting not just how efficiently it cleans, but also how fresh your laundry feels.

Thankfully, deep cleaning your washer isn’t as much effort as it sounds. Simply run an empty cycle with hot water and a machine cleaner like Truly Free Home Laundry Machine Cleaner or vinegar and baking soda.

If you’re going with the vinegar and baking method, add 2 cups of white vinegar to a hot water cycle to break down mineral deposits, soap scum, and mold. Follow it up with another hot water cycle and a ½ cup of baking soda to wash away any remaining residue and deodorize the drum. Finish with a final rinse cycle of plain water to flush out any leftover vinegar or baking soda.

Once you’ve deep cleaned the drum, take out the detergent dispenser drawer and soak it in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap. Then, grab a reusable cleaning cloth and non-toxic multipurpose cleaner to clean the gasket (especially if you have a front-loading machine) and the outside of your washing machine.

For the dryer, begin by giving the lint trap a thorough cleaning. Skipping this step can lead to a clogged dryer vent, which slows your dryer down and increases fire risk. Next, use a vacuum attachment to get to any remaining debris in the lint trap slot and underneath the machine. If possible, disconnect the dryer vent hose to clear out any blockages or buildup. Finally, wipe the dryer drum with a reusable cloth to sweep away any lingering residue.

Wipe Down All Surfaces

Give every surface a clean slate with a non-toxic, all-purpose cleaner like Truly Free Home Everyday Cleaner. Working from top to bottom, wipe off dust, detergent splashes, and grime from shelves, countertops, cabinet doors, baseboards, and walls.

Don’t forget overlooked spots like light switches, door handles, corners, and even hampers, which can easily collect buildup. If your laundry setup includes a sink, scrub it clean, paying special attention to nooks and crevices.

The final touch is the floor. Give everything a solid sweep and follow up with a non-toxic floor cleaner like Truly Free Home Floor Cleaner. Then, take a look around—you’ll find your laundry feels noticeably refreshed.

Upgrade Your Organization

Now that everything can pass the white-glove test, it’s time to put it all back—thoughtfully. Make your laundry area more functional by incorporating simple organization hacks like transferring detergent, powders, and sprays into uniform containers, grouping your most-used products into a single tray or bin to build a handy laundry kit, taking advantage of vertical space with floating shelves or wall hooks, and designating a bin or basket for loose change, lost socks, and other miscellaneous items.

If you’re tight on space, make the most of every inch with a slim rolling cart, a portable cleaning caddy to store all your essentials—detergent, stain remover, dryer balls—and a collapsible hamper or laundry tote that can be tucked away when it’s not in use. By streamlining your laundry station, you prioritize only what you really need. What you’re left with is a space that’s more elevated and intentional.
