Learn how to clean toys safely and effectively with non-toxic, plant-based cleaning products that really work

Which is worse: toys covered in germs or toys covered in toxic chemicals? Either one can make your little ones sick.

So if you’re removing grime only to leave harmful residues behind, you may inadvertently be doing more harm than good.

Here’s why.

How You Clean Toys Matters

Exposure to toxic chemicals is never good, but children are particularly susceptible to harsh substances.

Not only do they play on the ground and have a tendency to put toys in their mouths, their smaller size, higher metabolic rates, and developing bodies make them more vulnerable to toxins than adults.

And early exposure to harmful chemicals can have a lasting impact. Skin irritation, allergic reactions, and asthmatic flare-ups have all been linked to ingredients found in conventional laundry and cleaning supplies.

Even more concerning, studies show exposure to toxic chemicals over time may have a cumulative effect on children’s health and development.

To help you minimize your child’s risk and toxic load, here’s how to clean toys safely—from plastic fake fruit and wooden blocks to their favorite stuffed animal.

How to Clean Hard Plastic Toys

  1. Gently scrub the hard plastic toys with a reusable cloth or brush.
  2. Rinse toys thoroughly with clean water and let them air dry or wipe with a clean towel.

How to Clean Wooden Toys

  1. Mix equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle.
  2. Lightly mist wooden toys, let sit for 30 seconds before wiping them clean with a damp reusable cloth.
  3. Dry wooden toys immediately with a clean towel.

How to Clean Plush Toys or Stuffed Animals

  1. Place plush toys or stuffed animals in a mesh bag.
  2. Wash plush toys in your machine using Laundry Wash on a gentle cycle.
  3. Air dry plushies / stuffed animals in the sun or tumble dry on low heat.

How to Clean Electronic Toys

  1. Remove the batteries from the toy.
  2. Spray a reusable cloth with Truly Free Home’s Everyday Cleaner until damp, wiping down the toy, paying extra attention to buttons and crevices.
  3. Dry electronic toys thoroughly with a clean cloth before replacing batteries.

How to Clean Dry-Erase Boards / White Boards

  1. Spray a reusable cloth with Truly Free Home’s Heavy Duty Degreaser.
  2. Wipe away drawing or writing from markers on the dry-erase / whiteboard.
  3. Wipe the board clean with a damp cloth.

Is Bleach Safe for Cleaning Toys?

Just hosted a playdate with a kid who had the sniffles? While cleaners with bleach do kill germs, keep in mind that cleaning alone removes most germs, allergens, and impurities. (Learn more about cleaning vs disinfecting here.)

Plus, there are safer, non-toxic ways to deep clean toys.

Steam Cleaning Let the heat from a handheld steam cleaner work its magic to kill germs on toys.

Sunlight Exposure Place toys in direct sunlight for a few hours to naturally disinfect.

In the Dishwasher Most plastic toys are dishwasher-safe. Place toys in the top rack between the tines and run a sanitizing cycle using a mild, non-toxic detergent like Truly Free Home’s Dishwasher Soap
