Planning an Eco Party From Start to Finish

In many ways, hosting a more sustainable backyard celebration shifts the focus to what matters most to you: being intentional in the details and enjoying meaningful connection over good food. With the following mindful swaps, you can create a party that checks all the boxes.

Reusable Tableware vs. Compostable: Which Makes More Sense for Your Party?

One of the easiest steps in putting a sustainable spin on your backyard gathering is by forgoing single-use products altogether. Instead of reaching for traditional plastic and paper goods, use the dinnerware, cloth napkins, serving essentials, and glassware you already have on hand. It doesn’t just cut down waste; using your own pieces can make the setting feel more unique and personal.

If you’re expecting a larger crowd and don’t have enough reusable items for everyone, look for compostable options made from bamboo, palm leaf, or recycled materials. To make cleanup effortless, set out clearly labeled compost, recycling, and trash bins so guests can easily do their part to help limit waste.

Reducing Food Waste

When planning your menu, start by considering how much food you really need to prevent excess that may otherwise end up in the trash (food for thought: more than 119 billion pounds of food is wasted in the U.S. each year—that’s nearly 40 percent of the food supply). If you’re playing chef, shop your local farmers’ market for seasonal fruits, vegetables, herbs, and homemade baked goods. Buying locally-sourced ingredients not only supports farms and small businesses in the community, but also lowers the emissions and packaging needed to transport food. The fewer miles your food has to travel, the less impact it has on the environment—and the fresher and more flavorful it often is.

If you’re ordering food, try to choose a local restaurant or catering company that prioritizes decreasing their environmental footprint, whether through sourcing local, sustainable, and organic ingredients, offering plant-forward dishes (the meat industry is one of the biggest contributors of greenhouse gas emissions), or using compostable packaging.

And if you do have leftovers, send your guests home with extra food in reusable storage containers to further minimize waste.

Decorating Without the Waste

Sometimes the best decor is the kind that’s edible. Let large platters filled with colorful, seasonal fruits, fresh vegetables, cheese, charcuterie, nuts, popcorn, and dried fruit do the heavy lifting, doubling as both the centerpiece and snack spread. It’ll instantly make the table feel warm and welcoming. (Pro tip: Shop the bulk-bin aisle at the grocery store with your own reusable bags or containers and skip the plastic bags).

From there, build your tablescape with items you can use again and again—a neutral cotton or linen tablecloth, serving platters or wooden boards, and glassware work for essentially any occasion or color palette. Then, layer in a few bouquets of in-season florals, freshly-cut greenery, bowls of citrus fruits, and beeswax candles for warmth and ambiance. And if the festivities call for a little something extra, make your own biodegradable confetti using leaves, flower petals, construction paper scraps, or leftover tissue paper. The result is a combination of natural and handmade touches that elevate the look and feel of your gathering while being kinder to the planet.
